Cycle 21 DROP
Friday Night Lights is a good book but I am not finding me or connecting myself to the book. The only connection I have to the book is football and football is not a huge part of my life. I hope I can find a better book to help find myself better.
Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger, Cycle 20, 46-60
Summary
This section I read was all about Boobie Miles. This part talks about how all the college’s want Boobie to come play for them so they send him letters saying their school is the best, how nice their facility’s are, and how good their coaching staff is. They say all these things but they don’t mention how hard of a time Boobie will have in the classrooms at the college. Boobie wasn’t always the smartest kid in class. He takes classes that kids a couple of years younger are taking. In this part it talks about how Boobie plays hardcore, ass kicking football, and which football teams he wants to play for. It also talks about his relationship with his father. He didn’t live with his father all his life. He lived with his uncle on the Southside of Odessa where the blacks and Mexicans lived. It talks about when Boobie’s career gets questioned at a pre-season scrimmage. He runs the ball then gets hit funny and his knee gets messed up and he can’t put pressure on it so he see’s doctors and they tell him he has to get surgery and will be out for most the season.
Vocabulary
Adulation- obsequious flattery; excessive admiration or praise
Requite- make appropriate return for (a favor or service); reward
Incessant- (of something regarded as unpleasant) continuing without pause or interruption
1. What frustrates you most about this book, and why?
I am getting frustrated with this book for the second time. It is interesting enough for it to hold my attention but I am not finding myself within it. I choose this book because I thought I might find similar problems that I having that the football players are having but I am not doing that. They are high school students and are athletes like me but I don’t have problems with oil and living in the middle of nowhere. The other problem in this book is it deal’s with horrible racism that is not in Hawaii because everyone is so many different races and people use race as humor to make friendly jokes at each other. The living in Odessa is split white and black and Mexican when Hawaii is white, Asian, Hawaiian, Samoan, black, Filipino, and pretty much every race. The only connection between me and the book is the football factor but nothing else so I am debating on dropping the book and finding another that deals with me more.

Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger, Cycle 19, 31-45
Summary
Pages 31-37 were the last pages of the Chapter Odessa and told us more about the town. It told us that the town had the most murders per capita in the U.S. This was because when there was oil booms people would kill each other for money and then when there wasn’t any oiled to be pumped and found the town people would get frustrated at each other and shoot them up. The next chapter after that is The Watermelon feed. The Watermelon Feed was a big event held in Odessa that the whole town went to. The Watermelon Feed is an event when all the members of the Permian football team would get introduced to the town and the team and staff would talk about football. When the town would go to the Watermelon Feed they would wear all the Permian clothes they had and would wear only black and white, the Permian’s colors.
Vocabulary
Visceral- of or relating to the viscera
Unpretentious- no attempting to impress others with an appearance of greater importance, talent, or culture that is actually possessed.
Paradoxical- seemingly absurd or self-contradictory
1. List 2-5 high qualities, open-ended questions regarding the reading, and answer your questions.
1. Why are Permian people so into Mojo Football and not something else?
I think that the Permian people are so into Mojo Football and not something else because it is something all family’s is Odessa can be a part of. Also the Permian people can be proud of Mojo football. It’s something that they can be proud of because they are good at it and they know it. The Permian Football team is one of the best football teams in Texas and they always have a chance at having a winning season. The only other thing that is good in Odessa is the oil mining but the oil mining goes up and down and is always changing but the football team always does good.
2. How would the Odessa people be like with Mojo Football to obsess about?
I think that the Odessa people would go crazy and just commit crimes and do bad things. Mojo Football gives them something to train for and to live for. The Odessa boys dreams are to play for Mojo Football and do well for them so they start playing football at a young age. The parents of the football players and family’s and friends get into Mojo Football because they know someone who is in it or was a pepete when they went to Permian or played football themselves. Everyone in the town of Odessa has some connection to Permian football to entertain them and keep them occupied. If they didn’t have football they would probably have nothing to keep stable for and commit crimes or fight or just have sex to fill up their time.

Vocabulary
Emblazoned- conspicuously inscribed or display (a design) on something
Fanciful- (of a person on their thoughts and ideas) over imagination and unrealistic
Transient- lasting for only a short time; impermanent
1. Creative option #1: Rewrite the section you just read, or an excerpt of that section, from the perspective of another character or an object.
I am rewriting the part when Boobie is all mad that younger running back that replaces him.
Chris Comer:
This part I am rewriting is from pages 16-20
“I’m so glad the coaches decided play me over Boobie in such a important game against our rivals Midland Lee. I’m sort of scared that Midland Lee wills injury because I know they are not a play clean team. I am also scared that I will not be as good as Boobie and everyone will talk bad about me but hopefully after I run this first play I will feel better. I have to prove myself because this might be my only chance. I have to. After that first play I busted through the line and ran for a 1st down. I feel good and now with some confidence I feel 10 times better. Throughout the whole came that I played I ran for best game and had a couple TD’s now. But at halftime in the locker room I saw Boobie was really upset and he took his pads off and threw them against the wall with anger and frustration. And then after the game I saw him crying with another player and I think it wasn’t because we lost, I think it was because he didn’t play. I feel bad. I got to play but now Boobie is mad and doesn’t get to play.”
